The science behind SneakPeek®

SneakPeek Test uses a noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) method to detect the baby’s DNA present in the mother’s body. If male Y-chromosome DNA is present, it’s a boy! If not, it’s a girl.

Questions you might have:

A: According to controlled laboratory testing, the SneakPeek Early Gender Test predicts a baby’s gender with over 99% accuracy (99.6% to be exact). If you want a little more background on the science behind that percentage, here it is: In controlled laboratory tests, SneakPeek Test accurately detected shared male fetal DNA (the presence of the Y-chromosome in the mother’s sample) in more than 99% of samples provided by women pregnant with a male fetus. (Note: all women in the study were 9 weeks or further along in their pregnancy.) Male fetal DNA was consistently not detected in samples from pregnant women carrying female fetuses. In a blind multi-center study performed in 2015 with samples collected at four clinics, SneakPeek showed an accuracy rate of 100% for fetal sex identification. The results of this study are available here. In at-home testing, a validation study presented at the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) Conference showed that SneakPeek Early Gender Test is highly accurate at determining baby gender as early as 9 weeks into pregnancy. The data from the validation study showed 98% accuracy, the results may be reviewed here. While our mission is to provide a convenient, affordable at-home gender test, there are some limitations to performing the test yourself, and in an environment that may not be totally controlled. For instance, the laboratory process may result in errors if the sample does not contain a sufficient amount of fetal DNA, the sample is collected too early in the pregnancy (e.g., earlier than 9 weeks pregnant), the DNA in the sample is degraded, or the sample becomes contaminated by environmental, handling, or other sources of male DNA that may affect test results. It is therefore very important to collect the sample according to the instructions and procedures provided with the SneakPeek Early Gender Test. Failure to follow the instructions and procedures provided with the SneakPeek Early Gender Test may produce a an inaccurate result. SneakPeek’s parent company, Gateway Genomics, offers a 100% refund to customers whose test results do not match the gender of their newborn baby. Our refund policy is available here. SneakPeek is not intended to diagnose any disease or medical condition. SneakPeek was developed and its performance characteristics were determined by Gateway Genomics, LLC. SneakPeek has not been cleared or approved by the FDA.
